How Do I Apply For A NSFAS Bursary

Do you require financial aid to attend a higher education institution? Submit an application for a bursary via the NSFAS Portal. By reading this article, you may find out more about the NSFAS application forms and the application process. The NSFAS Application is made available to potential applicants by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) committee for bursary applications. NSFAS is a bursary program for students who are unable to acquire bank loans, study loans, or other sorts of financial aid because they do not have the money to pay for their education. How Do I Apply For A NSFAS Bursary

Create a new myNSFAS account or make changes to an existing one.

  • Activate the “myNSFAS” tab.
  • Choose “Register.”
  • To allow NSFAS to verify your information, check the appropriate box.
  • then fill out the form with your ID number exactly as it appears on your South African Identity Document (ID)
  • Using your ID number as a guide, enter your entire name and last name.
  • Please enter your current email address.
  • Verify the accuracy of your email.
  • Type in your cell phone number.
  • choose a password.
  • check the password
  • send the image of your ID
  • Choose “Register.”
  • The provided email address and mobile phone number will receive an OTP (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
  • Type the OTP in and click “Submit.”
  • You have now finished the re-registration process.
  • Click the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.

Required Documents For NSFAS Applications

The following papers must be in certified copy form and cannot be older than three months. Your documentation needs to be certified by the South African Police Service or the South African Post Office. This also applies if you are under the age of 18 or over the age of 18 but STILL DEPENDENT on the joint household income of your parents or guardians:

  • a certified copy of your South African ID or birth certificate. If you are under 16 years old and do not have a green bar-coded ID or smart ID card, you must show a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate.
  • IDs for the parents or guardians (death certificate)
  • IDs for the parents or guardian (and a death certificate if applicable).
  • a certified copy of your most recent transcript or set of test results. (If you’re currently in Grade 12, you don’t have to turn this in.)
  • records from the university’s registrar (if applicable)
  • travel and lodging documentation (if applicable)
  • Download the consent form, complete it, and have each applicant who has declared income sign it.
  • If you have a disability, download and complete the Disability Annexure A Form.

Who Can Receive NSFAS Funding

  • be a South African citizen;
  • The combined annual income of your household is less than R350 000;
  • You were awarded a grant by SASSA;
  • You are enrolling in a report 191 or National Certificate Vocational program at a TVET institution, or you are registering for your first undergraduate degree at a public university;
  • You want to enroll in a public university or TVET college to pursue a degree;
  • You already registered for college, and the annual income of your household is less than R122 000;
  • You have completed Grades 9 and 10 in order to qualify for NSFAS funding to attend a TVET college; you have completed Grade 12 in order to qualify for NSFAS funding to attend a university.

NSFAS Bursaries Coverage

NSFAS scholarships at colleges and universities reimburse these expenses.

  • Amounts indicated of accommodation,
  • living allowance,
  • transport and
  • learning materials need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines.


  • Accommodation
  • As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences


  • Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

NSFAS Bursary Closing Date

NOTICE: The NSFAS 2024 application deadline has been postponed to Friday, January 21, 2024. The previous deadline was this past Friday, January 7, 2024.
