Are you in need of financial assistance to attend a higher institution? Submit an application for a bursary through the NSFAS. In order to provide readers with the necessary information, this article has been published. NSFAS is a bursary program supported by the Department of Higher Education and Training for students who lack the resources to pay for their education and cannot acquire bank loans, study loans, or other forms of financial aid.

Students with disability also benefit from this scheme. The NSFAS Disability Bursary Program offers financial assistance to disabled students who need it and have the academic aptitude to succeed in their academic areas. What NSFAS Bursaries Cover

these are the things that NSFAS bursaries cover at colleges and universities

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
  • As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, of 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Who Qualifies For NSFAS Funding

To be eligible for bursaries applicant must meet these basic principles;

  • All South African citizens
  • All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
  • Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
  • A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
  • Students who started studying before 2024 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

If you have a disability, you must complete Annexures A and B and attach proof of disability and a quotation for assistive devices with the application form.

How Do I Apply Online For NSFAS

Application for NSFAS Account Funding:

  • Create an online account with myNSFAS, or update an existing one.
  • Check out www.nsfas.org.za
  • Go to the “myNSFAS” tab.
  • Select “Register”
  • Check the box to let NSFAS to validate your information.
  • then type your ID number as it appears on your South African Identity Document in the form (ID)
  • Enter your full name and last name according to your ID number.
  • Put your current email address here.
  • Validate your email address.
  • Enter your mobile phone number.
  • Set up a password.
  • Verify password
  • upload a copy of your ID
  • Select “Register”
  • An OTP will be issued to the entered email and mobile number (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
  • Enter the OTP and press “Submit”
  • You have now completed your re-registration
  • Click the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.

Documents Required For NSFAS Applications

The following documents should be prepared as certified copies and they should be no more than three months old. The South African Police Service or the South African Post Office must certify your paperwork. This also applies if you are under the age of 18 or if you are over 18 but STILL DEPENDENT on your parent’s or guardian’s combined household income:

  • a legitimate copy of your birth certificate or South African ID. You must present a certified copy of your unabridged birth certificate if you are under 16 years old and do not have a green bar-coded ID or smart ID card.
  • IDs for the guardian or parents (death certificate)
  • IDs for the guardian or parents (death certificate if applicable)
  • IDs for each individual residing in your home
  • Paystubs or appointment letters are acceptable forms of proof for your parent’s or guardian’s or your own annual household income if you are working. (This is true for all types of employment or income for all household members, including any income from SASSA grants, Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), or any retirement, life, disability, or other benefits paid as a lump sum or in monthly installments.)
  • a certified copy of your most recent exam results or transcript. (If you’re in Grade 12 right now, you don’t need to submit this.)
  • Registrar’s records from the university (if applicable)
  • Travel and lodging paperwork (if applicable)
  • Download the consent form, fill it out, and have everyone whose income has been disclosed in the application sign it.
    Download and complete the Disability Annexure A Form if you have a disability.

NSFAS Bursary Closing Date

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The application deadline for NSFAS 2024 has been extended to Friday, January 21, 2024. The earlier cutoff date was Friday, January 7, 2024.
