The National Student Financial Aid Scheme offers the following services for:

University in South Africa

  1. Considering the real expenses spent by the university (the cost of private housing cannot be higher than the cost of university housing), R7 500 is set aside each year for transportation (up to 40 kilometers from the institution).
  2. The total amount spent on living expenses each year is R15,000.
  3. The annual salary for The Cover’s Book is R5200.
  4. Students living in catered apartments must pay an extra R2900 per year for incidentals and personal care.

Tvet College in South Africa

  1. Offer a city apartment for R24,000 each year.
  2. Peri-urban homes are available for R18,900.
  3. The yearly cost of remote housing coverage is R15,750, while the cost of transportation is R7,350 (up to 40 km from the Institution)
  4. The Cover Transport Incidental/Personal Care Allowance is worth R 2900 per year.

Who qualify for the Nsfas bursary program

If you are a citizen of South Africa, intend to enroll in or are currently enrolled in a public university or TVET college, and complete the qualifications outlined below, you may be eligible for an NSFAS bursary.

Nsfas Online Application Requirements

  • Must be South African citizen / permanent resident
  • Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
  • Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify on financial eligibility
  • Must have email and cell phone number

What is needed from students during the Nsfas Application Process

To complete the application process and confirm eligibility, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) mandates the submission of additional information and verification of supporting documents. Prior to submitting the application, students must fulfill specific requirements, such as confirming the availability of all required information and supporting documents, meeting academic eligibility criteria, providing proof of household income, submitting a certified copy of their South African ID, ensuring accuracy of personal details, and submitting necessary documentation for disabilities or chronic illnesses, as well as any other relevant supporting documents stipulated by NSFAS.

  1. those who qualify for an SASSA grant, those with impairments, and those whose monthly household income is less than R600,000.
  2. Any university student who began attending before 2018 and whose household earns less than R122 000 annually is eligible.

  4. A completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, available for download here, must be submitted by an applicant who has been identified by the Department of Social Development as a Vulnerable Child.

Documents needed from Applicants when Applying Nsfas

  • Copy of student ID / Birth certificate
  • Copy of parent/s or guardian/ spouse ID
  • Smart card: both sides of card required
  • Proof of income (where applicable)
  • Persons living with disability (Disability Annexure A form)
  • An applicant who is recognized as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
  • An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA
