One of these sources of funding is the DHET Bursary Scheme, also known as the NSFAS bursary. The bursaries awarded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are viewed by many as a lifesaver. Given how competitive the bursary is, a how-to manual would be quite helpful. To submit an online application, candidates must first register and create a MyNSFAS profile on the NSFAS website. The applicant can access their personal account through this profile at any time of the year to view information about their applications and financing.

Who Can Receive NSFAS Funding
To qualify for bursaries, applicants must adhere to four fundamental standards;
- every South African national
- All winners of SASSA grants are eligible for funding
- applicants whose annual household combined income does not exceed R350 000
- A disabled person: The total annual household income cannot exceed R600,000.
- students whose home income is not more than R122 000 annually and who began their studies before 2024.
Documents needed from Applicants when Applying Nsfas
- Copy of student ID / Birth certificate
- Copy of parent/s or guardian/ spouse ID
- Smart card: both sides of card required
- Proof of income (where applicable)
- Persons living with disability (Disability Annexure A form)
- An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
- An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA
How to Apply Nsfas
In applying for financial support at nsfas, there are two methods that applicants can use to apply.
Method 1 [When applying Online]

- Go to www.nsfas.org.za
- Click on “myNSFAS” tab
- Click on “Register“
- Tick the box to allow NSFAS to verify your details
- Then enter your ID number on the field as it is stated on your South African Identity Document (ID)
- Type in your full names and surname as per your ID number
- Type in your current email address
- Confirm your email address
- Type in your cellphone number
- Create a password
- Confirm password
- Upload your ID Copy
- Click on register
- An OTP will be sent to the email and cell number provided (this OTP expires after 24 hours)
- Type in the OTP and click submit
- You have now completed your re-registration
- Click the APPLY tab to be directed to the online application form.
Method 2 [When you’re at the NYDA Centre]
- Go to a NYDA center/office near you and fill out an application form.
- A NYDA center worker will explain the application process and provide you an application form to fill out.
- Use a black pen to fill out the application form in CAPITAL letters and sign it in the designated areas.
- Submit your application form along with any supporting documentation (as listed below). Ensure that your supporting documents are signed on the front and are no more than three months old.
- A receipt card with a bar code will be mailed to you.
